Definition

SEO is the work on a site and its surroundings that earns organic positions in Yandex and Google: technical foundation, keyword coverage, content, commercial and behavioural signals and links, with the first durable results arriving after three to six months.

Structurally SEO splits into four workstreams, and the order between them matters more than any individual tactic. The technical layer makes indexing possible at all: page availability, speed, correct redirects, canonical URLs, no duplicates and no junk in the index. Semantics and structure decide how many pages are needed and what each one is about. Content closes the intent, the reason someone typed the query. External signals and commercial factors carry trust. Skipping the first block devalues the other three, because a page the crawler cannot see does not rank no matter how good the copy is.

In Russia the priorities differ from Western guides, and that is not a footnote. Yandex holds most of commercial search, and its ranking model leans harder on user behaviour and on commercial factors: prices on the page, assortment breadth, contact details, delivery terms, reviews. Google weighs the link profile and document relevance more heavily. The practical conclusion is that a guide written for Google optimises the wrong things for a Russian online store. Most projects work for both engines, but with a different split of effort.

Timelines are where client and contractor expectations diverge most often. The first visible movement in reports comes after two to three months, steady growth on mid-frequency queries after four to six, and competitive commercial niches need nine to twelve months of consistent work. A promise of top ten in a month means either manipulation or queries with no demand behind them. One 2026 specific: the share of informational queries answered directly inside the results page keeps growing, so impressions can rise while clicks stay flat, and that is the normal picture rather than broken analytics.

  • Technical foundation: indexing, speed, duplicates, redirects, a correct robots.txt and sitemap.
  • Semantics and structure: query clusters and one page per cluster.
  • Content that closes the intent rather than padding a word count.
  • Commercial factors: prices, assortment, contacts, delivery, reviews, company details.
  • External signals: mentions, review platforms, quality links without bulk buying.
